How air intake of an engine works.

To cause combustion in a heat engine, two key elements are needed: fuel and oxidizer. Bmods focus here on observing the way in which the oxidizer arrives in the engine, namely the oxygen present in the air. The first thing that the oxidizer admitted into an engine will cross will be the air filter.

The latter is responsible for trapping and retaining as many particles as possible in order to prevent them from damaging the guts of the engine (combustion chamber). However, there are several settings/calibers of air filters. The more particles a filter retains, the less easily it will let air pass: this will reduce the power of the engine a little (which then breathes a little less well) but it will improve the quality of the air that will enter the engine (less parasitic particles). Conversely, a filter which allows a lot of air to pass (high flow rate) will improve performance but will allow more particles to enter.

It must be changed regularly because it ends up clogging.
